      IIM Kozhikode BMS Programme Structure

The Bachelor of Management Studies (BMS) at IIM Kozhikode is a 4-year, 8-semester program that blends academic depth with flexibility. It provides a Major in Management and allows students to pursue minors in various interdisciplinary areas mentioned above.

      Credit System & Workload

The program follows a credit-based structure, which is the fundamental unit of study in this program. A credit signifies the academic workload of a course. It is based on the number of instructional hours per week during a semester. For example, a four-credit course involves at least four hours of weekly classroom sessions. In addition, students are expected to dedicate at least two hours to preparation before and after each class for every hour spent in the classroom.

Each semester will span at least 15 weeks, with two semesters conducted annually.

      • Odd/Fall Semesters (1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th): From September to December
      • Even/Spring Semesters (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th): From January to April

The summer break spans from May to August, during which students can engage in internships, faculty-led research projects, or summer term courses (usually worth 2 credits) to earn extra credits.

The coursework is divided into three key categories:

      1. Foundation Courses

These aim to build fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for advanced study in management. Subjects include:

      • Economics
      • Quantitative Methods
      • English
      • Accounting
      • Computer Science
      • Psychology
      • Sociology
      • Law

      2. Core Courses

These form the heart of the Management major, with students required to complete around 80 credits (approximately 20–24 courses) in topics such as:

      • Finance
      • Accounting
      • Organizational Behaviour
      • Marketing Management
      • Human Resource Management
      • Strategy
      • Operations Management
      • Supply Chain Management

The content depth in these subjects is comparable to the first year of a traditional two-year MBA program, preparing students for entry-level roles in management and business sectors.

      3. Elective Courses

Linked to the student’s chosen minor, electives allow for specialization and advanced knowledge in specific fields. Each student must select at least one minor comprising 40 credits (around 10–12 courses). The institute offers a list of electives each semester (especially in the third and fourth years), and students can bid for courses based on their interests. The availability of electives depends on the number of students opting for them.
